For starters, Vicodin is a prescription drug - meaning that it is officially recognized for some citizens to use it. Heroin is not legal.
Secondly, Vicodin, within a way tremendously similar to other painkillers, is addictive because it has hydrocodone contained by it, which is derived from opium. Heroin, on the other hand, is addictive because of its diacetylmorphine, which is also derived from opium. The two chemicals are vastly similar but diacetylmorphine is much, much stronger and more addictive. It also produces a much greater sense of euphoria. (Think of Vicodin as a really weak heroin.)
Vicodin, as most culture would buy it on the street, comes in pill form and is thus usually single swallowed as a pill or snorted. I suppose you could smoke it, if you wanted to, but that would be silly. I'm pretty sure shooting it up would be out of the grill. Heroin, however, can be taken in any form.

Hydrocodone is the generic form of the drug found within Vicodin, Lortab, Norco and Lorcet. Both are sythetic derivitives of the cedeine molecule however "oxy" is almost always stronger than "hydro" surrounded by any situation.
Heroin crosses the blood-brain barrier. Vicodin and adjectives other legal opiates do not.
