Mixing medication beside alcohol?


What happens if you drink alcohol while on medication (for example zyrtec, an allergy medicine), that says don't mix next to alcohol?

I took benadryl once and then go out drinking and it was the worst mistake I've ever made. I have people come up to me adjectives night asking me if I be on coke! then apparently I kept falling asleep illogically. All medications pretty much enunciate don't take next to alcohol.
