Valerian for insomnia. Are in attendance a tolerance or 'rebound' problems ie will my sleep be worse if I stop after
long term use?

I'm not a big fan of Valerian. It's more similar to a voodoo drug than anything. It will calm you down but it won't backing you sleep. I take melatonin. It's what your brain instinctively produces to make you sleepy.
Studies show that in attendance are no long term effects from taking it. They give test subjects melatonin doses that be almost 10 times higher than the recommended dose and they weren't any sleepier surrounded by the morning. It's almost impossible to overdose on it. You won't be drowsy in the morning and you'll sleep pretty in good health. Take it about ten hours beforehand you have to rouse up. It takes a while to see in and the ten hour buffer will engineer sure you aren't still working it out of your system in the morning. You can find it within the meds isle at the store or in the cubicle with adjectives the herbs and vitamins. Good luck.
I've used it and found it of assistance. I don't know of any habit forming traits any. It's often sold as a mix next to hops and sometimes passion flower. I'd probably start next to a mix, in tablet form, so that you're not making your own tea from it, next to unknown strength. Beware, most herbal products are currently unregulated, so there is minimal control - though this is shifting.

I too do not care for Valerian, relaxes you but does not give a hand to sleep. I take Melatonin 1 hour until that time bedtime, fall asleep well and stay asleep through the night. Yet I can awaken glibly in the middle of the dark if necessary.contained by other words you are not out cold. It is not habit forming and will not build your sleep patterns worse if you discontinue use.
