Answer:    It can do one or the other, or both - and a bunch of other cool junk too (i.e. assist surrounded by mental disorders, recoveries from surgery, addiction psychotherapy, improving sport concert, etc. etc. etc.)

If you just bearing into a massage cohesive and ask for a massage - 90% of the time, it will be a relaxation rub, based on Swedish-style technique. (info on 'Swedish' - the most common form of polish today: http://www.mamashealth.com/massage/sweed...

And that's great for destressing, feeling appropriate, etc. BUT, if you really want to get some pain-relieving blast for your buck - see a therapist that specializes within Neuromuscular Therapy (http://www.bucklandmassage.com/nmtherapy... Rolfing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolfing), or Myofascial Release(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myofascial_... It would be an involved, anatomical explanation into exactly why these are different, but to be very common, a variety of things (injuries, stress, occupation, long-held emotions, etc.) can wreak our muscles to spasm, which causes chronic anguish and a host of other problems. These therapies address the spasmed muscles specifically and return them to a state of normalcy. The piece about it, though, is that these therapy are rarely relaxing and commonly quite stinging at the time - so they really are for someone who is seeking to 'get rid of pain' - and will do about anything for it.

Of course, nearby are therapies contained by between the two types I mentioned - and anyone can find one that will greatly improve their natural life. Massage is vastly underrated!
Both, a double bonus. Both, depending on the necessitate. If you need it for headache, however, I would recommend seeing a professional like a chiropractor.
