How can I turn my mind 'off'..surrounded by writ to relax & shift to sleep?
Things I've TRIED:
warm baths (w/differnt herb & salts), hot showers, cookies & milk, great husband-given back massage, sound psychiatric therapy (rain, waves, hours of darkness crickets sounds), relaxing music..favorite so far is the'jelly fish music from the Monteray Bay Aquarium jellyfish exibit,; soothing- talk medatative sleep CD's; Tylenol PM (that's works..but is not a 'automatic sleep). Melatonin (works but not as fast or as strong...same w/Kava Kava teas & supplements...Valerin and chamomille teas; writing list down before bed; reading; Valium (again does work but deviant nor long lasting sleep, tried staying up until couldn't function (lasted 3 days ...become a functioning -zombie & then singular slept for a few hours.
It does seem I can sleep greatly well the 15 to 20 mins right BEFORE my alarm go of on my 4 early shift work days. Temp is flawless in the room..nice & bleak..would like a bright bed, but it's not bad or too prehistoric.
If there's any you've tried, that I HAVEN't, please help an Insomniac!

wow you tried alot of things. i'm a tiny bit insomniac myself, and in that are two things that just knock me out.
the faster and more sure method is to over exercise and purloin a warm shower, by the time i hit the bed i'm out. (but the morning sores are simply horrible)
Then there is the meditation, if i hold the time i sit in the meditation sitting position and come up with about anything that comes to mind and one by one i resolve and turn sour those thoughts until i have none, next i hit the bed.
or if i don't have time i falsehood in bed and do the no thinking meditation, where on earth you try to not think at adjectives and if any thought comes you let it sort of rise and crash down away. (hard to explain in words but someting approaching that.)

try closing your eyes
Go to Wal-mart, a drugstore, or a vitamin shop and try "Calms Forte" by Highland Brands. They are an all inbred sleep aid (no melatonin in this). Take 3 tab 1 hour before bed and they should back you to sleep. You can also use them during the day for stress or PMS symptoms. 1-2 tab during the daytime. They are very sheltered, you can even give them to children. I hold used them for years and love them. No morning hangover either! Good Luck!
If you want your mind to step numb, simply watch a couple of Pauly Shore movies.
Have you tried exercising? I hear this works. How more or less reading a boring book. Or a book that is complicated to understand... close to physics
Stay away from TV and computer for at least 2 hours prior to bedtime (I know, for those of us on YouQA this seem impossible). Keep those two things OUT of the bedroom too. The body needs to subconsciously "know" that when you budge to the bedroom, it's time to wind down.
My wife take some calcium 1/2 hour before bed. It's obedient for your bones, of course, but it's also a untaught muscle relaxant and helps her body to unwind after a afternoon of housework, cooking and beating the kids (just kidding).
She also tell me that I sleep "more calmly" when I don't get on YouQA lately before going to bed.....
