When a medication is first released it is patented by the company who invented it for example, Eli Lilly originally patented Prozac, (medical describe Fluoxetine) until that patent have run outthey were the just company allowed to sell it and it be sold under the 'label' or brand heading of Prozac. Once the patent finishes it is possible for other companies to vend fluoxetine 'off label' lower than generic medical name of fluoxetine. The benefit of this is that it is next sold at a much lower cost. The reason the resourceful company would have charged more would own been in some measure to recoup the cost of developing the medicaion and secondly because they can as no other company be able to market it.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS IS THAT THE DOCTOR WHO COMMENCED THE TREATMENT MAY HAVE GOOD REASON AND ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE FROM DETAILED RESEARCH TO COMMENCE THE DRUG (just because its being used bad license, doesn't necessarily make it unsafe) BUT THE DRUG COMPANY WILL NOT PAY OUT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG BECAUSE THE DRUG WAS GIVEN FOR SOMETHING THAT IT WAS NOT INTENDED FOR.
