Do herbal supplements wear past its sell-by date over time?

I was wondering if herbal supplements such as valerian, seradyn or any others for anxiety wear off or stop working over time? I know that SSRI's do and you have to up the dose after time but is this like peas in a pod for herbal? Or will they work just as strong as they ever did? In other words will your body get used to them and become tolerant so they don't work after a long time?
Answers:
Not exactly, but some may feel close to it.
Yeah, that's kind of vague, but here's what I mean... supplements necessarily give your body nutrition it's otherwise lacking.

To use an analogy, it's like drinking hose. If you are severely dehydrated, a cup of water is going to feel undeniably wonderful and taste better than anything you've ever had... but if you've just finished drinking a quart of sea, another cup might be somewhat nauseating.
To go a step further, when you first start drinking water, you can clearly see that it quenches your thirst and feel good. As you keep drinking it on a regular basis (say, 1 cup every hour or two as is mostly recommended), you're not going to notice as much of the thirst quenching because you won't be thirsty to start with. That same piece happens with supplements... as you use it on a regular basis, you might not surface as much of a difference, but that's because you've improved since you started, not because the supplement has gotten worse. I hope that makes sense.

I've truly told this to a few people who were still skeptical so I told them that if you want to see how well a supplement (that you've be taking for a while) is working for you... stop taking it. If the supplement is working, you won't feel as good within a week or two as your body get more deficient on the nutrients it was giving you.
Good luck and I hope I helped! Source(s): Personal experience and personal research within my role as a Product Specialist for a vitamin company
The answer above mine was wonderful.

Basically you just "get used" to the supplement, so you don't touch the effects as much as do when you first take it.
