Is there a good kind of Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (as in "derived from coconuts, etc")?

I enjoy read a lot about the destructive effects of SLS, but does it matter where it is derived from? If it comes from a plant or untaught substance, does it make it any better or LESS harmful?

Answer:    My knowledge is that the main purpose of SLS is to provide the lathering qualities of soap. This feature can be derived from saponafide coconut oil as well. Many vigour stores sell coconut oil soap or raw glycerine soap.
