Sarsaparilla is a alternative. dieuretic, tonic, stimulant, relaxant, demululcent. diaphoretic, cathartic, anti-arthritic, anti-syphilitic, depurant, deobstruent, anti-scorbutic, and carminative herb according to Dr Christopher's big herbal book ..the school of colloquial healing

It is a blood purifier (alternative herb which means it alters the existing nutritive and excretory processes and gradually restores everyday body functions)..they gradually alter and correct impure conditions of the blood.

There are hundreds of herbs that do this.

Some of them are plantain, red clover, burdock root, chaparral, oregon grape, b;lug flag, sassafras, echinacea. purple loosestrife, ashen dock and garlic so any of these could be substituted if this is why you are taking it

The only thing I could find on stinging nettle in his book is that it is a source of potassium chloride as is bladderwrack, Irish moss, elecampe, gravel root, crazy yam,. pleurisy root, wild cherry bark

ginseng is a tonic herb (but it may be other things but not listed int he book)..but a tonic herb is similar to a whole body herb..tonic herbs stimulate nutrition and permanently increase systemic tone, animation, vigor, and strength

some other herbs listed as tonic herbs are black pepper, black walnut, bugle weed, burdock, carrot, cayenne, chicory, dandelion, echinacea, garlic, horseradish, milkweed root, oregon grape, red clover, slippery elm, white oak, yarrow, pallid dock and hundreds of others (I just picked out a few)
